Practical knowledge should be in focus

 

We are in a time where there is a lack of people with skills in practical occupations. This applies particularly in health care, construction and exports. There is also a trend where fewer high school students are seeking to practical programs and the number is now down to 25 percent, and out of these nearly half choose the the health – and socialprogram.

There are several reasons for the growing trend, including the view on practical programs, that is strongly associated with the prejudice to school tired students with lower ambitions seeking practical programs.

The Swedish educational system is today in many aspects, created by and for theorists. The theoretical knowledge is dominant and valued generally higher than practical knowledge. Is it not time to leave old beliefs and value things differently?
